10-Digit Dialing
by Deborah Grover, Bell Atlantic

To prepare Northern Virginia customers for the introduction of the new 571 area code, a nine-month dialing grace period will begin on June 1 and continue to March 1, 2000. During this time customers can complete local calls within the 703 area code by dialing either ten or seven digits.

When introduced next year, the new 571 area code will overlay, or cover, the same geographic area as the current 703 area code. The overlay plan is increasingly used for area code relief because current customers keep their existing area code and telephone numbers. This way they avoid any inconvenience or cost associated with distributing new numbers and reprinting stationery, business cards, and personal checks.

Here’s what you can do to ensure a smooth transition:

  • Start using 10-digit dialing (area code plus number) whenever a local number is dialed in the 703 area code.
  • Re-program any automatic dialing equipment or services currently programmed to dial a seven-digit number
  • Be sure to give an area code and get an area code whenever you exchange phone numbers.
  • Do everything before March 1, 2000.
