The Fairfax County Park Authority is encouraging participation in the first annual One Dark Hour event. This April 22, 2022, event will be the kickoff to the celebration of International Dark Sky Awareness Week. The Park Authority is committed to raising awareness to the importance of dark skies as our region continues to grow and urbanize. Dark skies are important to wildlife and plant resources that we all depend on for a healthy ecosystem with clean air and water. Following the county’s outdoor lighting standards would make all our homes dark sky friendly. Dark skies do not demand that we get rid of all the lights, only to have light where and when it is needed.

Fairfax County Seeks Input from Residents to Shape the Future of Bus Service in Fairfax County
Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) continually evaluates bus service on Fairfax Connector and is conducting a second round of outreach on the ten-year Transit Strategic Plan (TSP). We want to hear from Fairfax County residents at two upcoming, online community input meetings and through an online survey The TSP is a county-wide review of bus service and a plan for future service. FCDOT encourages residents to engage and share their ideas and concerns for the future of the Fairfax Connector bus system.The TSP incorporates outreach results from short-term, sub-area studies that are being conducted in:
-
-
- Herndon-Reston;
- Franconia-Springfield;
- Centreville-Chantilly-Vienna-Tysons (CCVT); and
- Huntington (part of the Richmond Highway BRT project)

To enhance outreach to all communities in Fairfax County, FCDOT produced a brochure that was translated into ten languages and mailed to every resident in Fairfax County in March 2022, directing people to the online survey.Public comments will be accepted until April 15, 2022.

2022 Paving and Restriping Program
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)’s Northern Virginia Paving Program (https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/transportation/2022-paving-and-restriping-program) improves hundreds of miles of roads in Fairfax County every year. VDOT and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation FCDOT) use this program as an opportunity to increase driver, bicyclist and pedestrian safety with road and crosswalk improvements while minimizing the financial investment in restriping work.
The repaving program can include limited bike lane, shoulder and crosswalk improvements with signage and markings. Bike lanes or shoulders are usually installed where excess pavement width is available. Many factors need to be considered for the installation of crosswalks, including the traffic speeds and volumes, available sight distance, presence of curb ramps, and pedestrian activity.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
FCDOT currently is holding community meetings virtually. For those who cannot attend, a video of each meeting will be available on the district paving and restriping page after the event. Schedules, registration links and dial-in information – along with proposed improvements for every district – will be posted as soon as they are available.
Public Information Meetings; Submitting Feedback
The community is invited to provide striping-related feedback by attending a virtual public meeting and/or by submitting comments online. Login information will be posted here as soon as it’s available; please check back soon. The Sully meetings is scheduled for 7pm 21 April, See their site at (https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/transportation/2022-paving-and-restriping-program) ifor the link The deadline for public comments will be two weeks after each meeting is held.
