Education
- Guide to Back to School Immunizations
- As the start of the new school year approaches, it is important for parents and guardians to ensure that their child is is up to date on their immunizations.
- The first step is to check immunization records to find out which ones may be missing. This can be done in one of the following ways:
- Request immunization records for free through the Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS).
- If your child was immunized outside of Virginia, get records from those states’ systems.
- Request records from your healthcare provider. Some may charge for copies.
- If your child is missing immunizations, take the following steps to get them up to date:
- Contact your doctor. Many primary care doctors require an appointment. This is also a good time to get caught up on routine medical care (physicals, dental appointments, vision / hearing screenings, etc.)
- If you do not have a doctor, visit a Health Department clinic. They offer immunizations to all Fairfax County students as well as those who are behind on their scheduled immunizations, need a booster, or are new to the country.
- Find a community clinic. Inova Cares Clinic for Families provides childhood immunizations for patients who qualify for Medicaid, FAMIS, Inova’s Financial Assistance Program, or are uninsured. HealthWorks for Northern Virginia and Neighborhood Health also provide healthcare, including vaccinations, for children, families, and individuals, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.
- The Fairfax County Health Department is holding several immunization clinics on evenings and weekends during the month of August. These clinics will offer school-required immunizations at no cost to all Fairfax County students, regardless of whether they’ve had vaccines in the past, are new to the country, or need a follow-up to be up-to-date. Appointments at these clinics are required, and spaces are limited. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule one today.
- Back to School Community Day at Sully Community Center
- Fairfax County’s Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) will hold its Back to School Community Day at Sully Community Center on Saturday, August 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature informational tables, face painting, outdoor activities, and school supply giveaways. Free parking and shuttles for the event will be provided at Rachel Carson Middle School (13618 McLearen Road, Herndon). Please contact 571-789-5973 (TTY 711) or Sandra.Chavez@fairfaxcounty.gov for more information.

- Children’s Summer Reading Festival at Chantilly Regional Library
- Fairfax Library Foundation will hold its annual Children’s Summer Reading Festival at Chantilly Regional Library (4000 Stringfellow Road in Chantilly) on Sunday, August 18 from noon to 3 p.m. This free event is designed to encourage a passion for reading and will offer crafts, bounce houses, snacks, face painting, live music, food trucks, and more. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP online.
- July Public Hearings Rescheduled to September 10
- Public hearings held during Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meetings on July 16 and 30 will be rescheduled to September 10 due to a clerical error. This is necessary to comply with new public hearing advertising requirements introduced by a new state law that went into effect on July 1.
- As a result, the Zoning Ordinance amendment for data centers, which was scheduled for a Board decision on July 30, will also be rescheduled to September 10.
- Provide Feedback on Fairfax County’s Future Waste Reduction Strategies
- The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requires Virginia localities to update their respective solid waste management plans every five years. These plans address topics like source reduction, reuse, recycling, and waste processing methods. Fairfax County’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) is expected to submit its updated plan to the state agency by April 2025.
- Fairfax County’s Community-Wide Energy and Climate Action Plan (CECAP) was finalized in September 2021 and outlines strategies across five sectors that will allow the county to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Waste management is one of the sectors with the goal of achieving zero waste by 2040 through diverting 90% of trash from landfills and incinerations. DPWES is currently in the process of creating its draft solid waste management plan and has created an online survey to allow community members to share their thoughts on how our waste should be managed. The survey is designed to take about 10 minutes and will be open now through Monday, September 30. Participants can also choose to be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card.
